Ten Health Benefits of Drinking Tongan Kava (backed by medical research)

What are the health benefits of drinking Tongan Kava? Read on to discover 10 Health Benefits of Tongan Kava and why this traditional beverage is gaining popularity worldwide, particularly in the holistic health and wellness field.

Kava, also known as Kava Kava or Kava Tonga in Tongan culture, is a traditional drink that has been cherished in the Pacific Islands for centuries. Made from the root of the Piper methysticum plant, kava is renowned for not only for its cultural and social significance but also for its numerous health benefits.

In Tonga, kava plays a central role in social gatherings, ceremonies, and rituals, often symbolising unity, respect, and relaxation. Beyond its cultural importance, modern research and anecdotal evidence have highlighted kava's potential as a natural remedy for various health issues.

1. Kava Provides Natural Stress Relief

One of the most well-known benefits of kava is its ability to promote relaxation and alleviate stress. The active compounds in kava, called kavalactones, have been shown to interact with the brain's neurotransmitters, particularly gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). GABA is known for its calming effects on the nervous system. By enhancing GABA activity, kava helps to reduce anxiety, promote a sense of calm, and ease the mind. Many people who consume Tongan kava report feeling more relaxed and less stressed, making it an effective natural alternative to synthetic anxiolytics and antidepressants.

2. Kava can Improve Sleep Quality

Sleep disorders, such as insomnia, affect millions of people worldwide. Tongan kava has been traditionally used as a remedy for improving sleep quality. Its sedative properties can help induce sleep and improve the quality of rest without causing the grogginess often associated with prescription sleep aids. The calming effect of kava on the nervous system helps to relax the mind and body, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep. For those struggling with sleep disturbances, kava can offer a natural solution that promotes deeper, more restorative sleep.

“Sleep-inducing and improving effects, with increased deep sleep periods and sleep spindle activity, have been reported as well. Similar results were observed in patients with non-psychotic anxiety-related sleep disorders (200 mg kava/day)." - Kava as a Clinical Nutrient: Promises and ChallengesNational Library of Medicine Review published 2020

3. Kava Provides Pain Relief and Muscle Relaxation

Pain Relief and Muscle Relaxation with Tongan KavaKava is also known for its analgesic and muscle relaxant properties. The kavalactones in kava can help to reduce pain and muscle tension, making it a popular choice for individuals suffering from chronic pain conditions, such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, and migraines. Additionally, kava's muscle-relaxing effects can be beneficial for those experiencing muscle spasms or tension, providing relief without the side effects associated with conventional pain medications.

“It has been observed during animal trials that high doses of kava kava binds to the opioid receptors in the brain that are similar to the binding sites of other anxiolytics without affecting cognitive function. This can also provide evidence that kava kava may have some pain-relieving properties from a biochemical perspective.” - Systemic Review of the Use of Kava Kava for the Reduction of Anxiety Disorder - Taneja College of Pharmacy, University of South Florida published July 14, 2023

 4. Kava has Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Inflammation is the body's natural response to injury or infection, but chronic inflammation can lead to various health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, and autoimmune disorders. Studies have suggested that kava may possess anti-inflammatory properties, potentially helping to reduce inflammation in the body. The kavalactones in kava are believed to inhibit certain inflammatory pathways, thereby reducing the production of inflammatory cytokines. By incorporating Tongan kava into a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle, individuals may benefit from its anti-inflammatory effects, supporting overall health and wellness.

“Anti-inflammatory activities have been reported for kava and its compounds, suggesting their potential for the treatment of inflammatory diseases.”Kava as a Clinical Nutrient: Promises and ChallengesNational Library of Medicine Review published 2020

5. Kava Relaxes without Reducing Cognition

Contrary to the sedative effects of many relaxants, kava has been found to enhance relaxation without impairing mental clarity. Some users report improved focus, attention, and mental clarity after consuming kava. This makes kava a unique option for those seeking to reduce stress and anxiety while maintaining productivity and cognitive performance. The balance between relaxation and mental sharpness makes kava a popular choice among individuals who need to manage stress without compromising their ability to think and perform tasks efficiently.

“This (kava), in turn, causes an enhanced relaxed state while maintaining cognition unlike other substances such as alcohol.” Systemic Review of the Use of Kava Kava for the Reduction of Anxiety Disorder - Taneja College of Pharmacy, University of South Florida published July 14, 2023

6. Kava Provides Social Connection and Community Building

Beyond the individual health benefits, kava plays a significant role in promoting social connection and community building. In Tonga, kava is often consumed in social gatherings, where people come together to share stories, discuss important matters, and enjoy each other's company. This sense of community and togetherness is an essential aspect of Tongan culture and contributes to the overall well-being of individuals. The social nature of kava consumption helps to strengthen bonds, reduce feelings of isolation, and foster a sense of belonging, which are all crucial for mental and emotional health.

7. Kava is a Natural Remedy for Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health conditions worldwide. Tongan kava has been traditionally used to help manage anxiety symptoms due to its calming effects. Unlike pharmaceutical medications, which can have side effects such as drowsiness, dependency, and withdrawal symptoms, kava offers a natural alternative with a lower risk of adverse effects. Studies have shown that kava can be effective in reducing symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), making it a valuable tool for individuals seeking a natural approach to managing their anxiety.

8. Kava Can Support Addiction Recovery

Kava's ability to promote relaxation and reduce anxiety can be beneficial for individuals recovering from addiction. The calming effects of kava can help alleviate withdrawal symptoms and reduce cravings, making it easier for individuals to transition away from addictive substances. While kava should not be seen as a standalone treatment for addiction, it can complement other recovery strategies by providing natural support for managing stress and anxiety during the recovery process.

“Studies by Steiner suggest that kava may reduce cravings associated with substances of abuse, such as alcohol, tobacco, cocaine, and heroin. Kava has also been used as part of addiction rehabilitation programs in New Zealand with a reported 90% success rate” Kava as a Clinical Nutrient: Promises and ChallengesNational Library of Medicine Review published 2020

 9. Kava is a Natural Alternative to Alcohol

For those who seek relaxation and social connection without the intoxicating effects of alcohol, kava offers a natural alternative. Tongan kava provides a sense of calm and relaxation without impairing cognitive function or causing the negative health effects associated with alcohol consumption. As a result, kava is becoming increasingly popular as a social drink that promotes relaxation and community without the risks of alcohol-related harm.

10. Kava Can Relieve Menopausal Psychological Symptoms

Kava has shown promise in treating menopausal symptoms, particularly anxiety, which is a common issue during this stage of life. In a study involving 40 women in either physiological or surgical menopause, researchers compared the effectiveness of combining Kava-Kava extract with hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to HRT alone. The women were divided into groups, with some receiving a combination of natural estrogens, progestin, and Kava-Kava extract, while others received the same hormone therapy with a placebo. Over a six-month period, all groups experienced a significant reduction in anxiety symptoms, as measured by the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA). However, the groups treated with the combination of HRT and Kava-Kava extract showed a greater reduction in anxiety compared to those who received only hormone therapy.

The study concluded that combining HRT with Kava-Kava extract could be a highly effective approach for managing psychological symptoms like anxiety and depression in postmenopausal women, without compromising the beneficial effects of estrogen on physical health issues such as osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease.

"The results of this study show that the association of HRT and Kava-Kava extract may represent an excellent therapeutic tool for the treatment of women in stabilized menopause, in particular those suffering from anxiety and depression" -Assessment of the association of Kava-Kava extract and hormone replacement therapy in the treatment of postmenopause anxiety, Clinical Trial,  Minerva Ginecol 2000

Safety Considerations

While kava offers numerous health benefits, it's important to prioritise safety and moderation in its consumption. Concerns about kava's impact on liver health have been raised in the past, but these issues are mainly linked to low-quality kava products, improper preparation methods, and the use of non-traditional plant parts, such as stems and leaves.

Traditional Tongan kava, particularly noble kava, is made from high-quality roots and prepared using time-honoured methods, which significantly reduce the risk of liver toxicity. Noble kava varieties are especially valued for their favourable chemical composition, with a higher proportion of beneficial kavalactones like kavain and dihydrokavain, known for promoting relaxation and stress relief. In contrast, non-noble kava often contains higher levels of less desirable kavalactones, such as dihydromethysticin, which can lead to negative side effects like nausea, lethargy, and an increased risk of liver issues.

Therefore, sourcing kava from reputable suppliers and consuming it in moderation is essential to safely enjoy its benefits.
